Prague, beyond the postcard

Practical tips for Prague

Places to visit, a one-day walk, local food and transport — plus useful Czech phrases and small tips for a smoother stay.

Six places to fall for Prague

Our starting points for a first visit. Outdoor stops are easy to combine; check individual opening times and tickets before entering monuments.

Staré Město

Staroměstské náměstí

Come for the Old Town Hall and astronomical clock, then wander into the lanes around Týn. An early start leaves more space to look up.

Vltava

Karlův most

Cross on foot for views of the Vltava and the bridge towers. Pause at the riverbank too: the bridge is often more beautiful from a little distance.

Hradčany

Pražský hrad

Give the castle district time. Courtyards, cathedral silhouettes and city views reward a slower pace; interiors have separate visiting conditions.

Malá Strana

Malá Strana & Kampa

Take the small streets below the castle, then head to Kampa for a gentler riverside pause. A good counterpoint to the busiest squares.

Letná

Letenské sady

A hillside park for that layered view of Prague’s bridges. Expect an uphill walk; bring water and choose comfortable shoes.

Nové Město

Rašínovo nábřeží

Along the river below the New Town, trade sightseeing for a stroll. The atmosphere changes with weather, season and scheduled events.

Prague City Tourism

Taste Prague, one table at a time

Czech comfort food belongs to an unhurried lunch. Balance the hearty classics with a small bakery stop, good coffee and the city’s contemporary kitchens.

Svíčková na smetaně
Beef with creamy vegetable sauce, bread dumplings and often cranberry garnish. Rich, comforting and made for a long lunch.
Kulajda
Creamy mushroom and potato soup with dill, often served with an egg. Recipes vary; ask about ingredients.
Chlebíčky
Open-faced sandwiches with colourful toppings. Choose a few to share for a quick, very Czech lunch.
Koláč
A sweet pastry with poppy seed, curd cheese or fruit filling. A simple companion to an afternoon coffee.

Menus and recipes vary. Ask about allergens and vegetarian options rather than assuming a dish is suitable. Beer is part of Czech dining culture; a nealko or another alcohol-free drink fits the table just as well.

The city is closer by tram

Metro, trams and buses share the PID system. Metro runs approximately from 05:00 to midnight; night trams and buses take over. Check your specific connection in PID Lítačka, especially during works.

Stamp an unstamped paper ticket once before your first ride or metro entry. In Lítačka, activate in advance and wait for the one-minute protection period to finish before boarding or entering the paid metro area. Transfers are included while the ticket remains valid.

Standard Prague fares for adults aged 15–59, checked 4 October 2026. Discounts and free travel have separate proof-of-age rules. Airport Express and historic tourist lines use separate fares.

A day ticket gives you freedom

The 24-hour pass is worthwhile from four separately ticketed 30-minute journeys: 140 Kč in the app versus 144 Kč. For mostly walking and only one or two rides, singles cost less. The 72-hour app pass costs 340 Kč, compared with 420 Kč for three 24-hour passes. Validity is rolling, not tied to midnight.

A few Czech words go a long way

A friendly greeting is a good beginning. These small phrases help at a café, on a tram or when finding your way.

Dobrý den
Hello / Good day
Prosím
Please / You’re welcome
Děkuji
Thank you
Promiňte
Excuse me / Sorry

Small tips. A better day.

  • Choose CZK when a card terminal offers currency conversion; compare any fees with your bank. Check the total before confirming.
  • Look for “polední menu” at lunchtime. Read the prices before sitting down; central locations can vary considerably.
  • Keep clear of tram tracks and check both directions before crossing. A pedestrian crossing does not make an approaching tram stop instantly.
  • Download your route and keep your phone charged if using an app ticket. A purchased but inactive ticket is not ready for travel.

Before you go

Can I see central Prague in one day?

You can enjoy the main outdoor sights in one day using our walking route. Add another day for castle interiors, museums and a less hurried pace.

Is the day transport pass always cheaper?

No. A 24-hour app ticket costs 140 Kč and beats four separately ticketed 30-minute rides at 36 Kč each. If you mainly walk, one or two single tickets can be better.

Can I join an experience on my own?

Many group formats are a natural way to share a moment and start a conversation. Check the organiser’s description, language and meeting point; we cannot guarantee who will attend.

Are tickets and meals included in the editorial route?

No. It is a self-guided suggestion. Food, transport, paid interiors and organised experiences are booked and paid for separately.

Good to know

Can I book directly on Prague Daybook?

No. We help you explore ideas. When a verified partner link is available, booking, payment and support are handled by that partner.

How do I plan an experience?

Check the partner’s website for current dates, final prices and availability. Prague Daybook does not hold inventory.

How are experiences selected?

We bring together different ways to enjoy Prague, with a focus on atmosphere, practical detail and a pace that suits your day.

Do I need an account to save ideas?

No. Saved IDs are stored in this browser. Clearing browser storage removes the list.
